Core Learning Values
International School of Macaé (ISoM) believes in the merits of providing a global education to national and international students, with activities that develop critical thinking and analysis on issues of international importance such as environmental concerns, economics and social interactions.
We recognize the importance of building learning power and developing emotional intelligence in our children. We know that learning happens best as children develop into confident, enthusiastic and effective learners. To this end, the teacher provides opportunities for all the children in the class to fulfill their potential by teaching in specific ways that meet the needs of children as learners, and by developing strong study skills and research abilities.
The International Primary Curriculum is leading this cross-curricular way of learning. Teachers lead students to devote blocks of time working in teams across learning areas. The base-line of computational, numeric, geometric and algebraic skills and concepts of the Everyday Math program used in our classrooms was developed at the University of Chicago, USA. Our science program is influenced and linked to the research provided by the National Geographic Society.
Treasures is a research based, comprehensive Reading Language Arts program for grades K-6 which incorporates high quality literature coupled with explicit instruction and ample practice ensuring that students grow as life-long readers and writers.
In brain-friendly ways, History and Social Studies are symbiotic components of the IPC and students express their understanding of what they learn using principles derived from the Multiple Intelligences7 conceptual framework, which helps their understanding of themselves; students find that each one of them has different qualities that matter. Students find their own niche and excel in their own individual ways through collaboration with their peers.
ISoM faculty and staff participated in four comprehensive IPC Implementation Workshop sessions delivered in July, 2008, by Certified IPC Implementation Specialists. Early, at the start of this school year, our school obtained and signed a licensing agreement with the IPC Group and our teachers have complied with the essential professional development required for full implementation. Thus, ISoM is now part of a worldwide network that includes upwards of 800 international schools located in the United States, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and now, Brazil.
