About Our School
Inspired by the meaning of its own name, Ambiente Transformador e InteratIVO, ATIVO grew out of a dream of 20 teachers who were committed to providing an alternative to limited options for education in Macaé. ATIVO opened its doors in February 2000, beginning that first school year with 75 students. ATIVO is completing its tenth operational year with an enrollment of over 500 students. This unprecedented growth can be attributed to an experienced and dedicated group of teachers and administrators. Each teacher strives to create a supportive and challenging classroom atmosphere which in turn encourages students' involvement and participation. ATIVO teachers meet or exceed MEC –the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture– requirements.
In 2004, the ATIVO – A Global School project began with one certified American teacher and three teacher assistants, enrolling 56 ATIVO students into its English Immersion Program. In 2008, International School of Macaé (ISoM) responded to the challenge of continuing with the mission to serve a growing community of national and international learners. Currently, ISoM serves over 200 national students from ages 3 through 14 and more than 40 international students from ages 3 through 16; and a team of fully credentialed and certified teachers and administrative staff from Australia, Brazil, Great Britain, Hungary, South Africa, Trinidad-Tobago, and the USA; additionally, the ISoM teaching team includes two national, certified teachers with a specialization on linguistics who have earned Master Degrees from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas and the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro.
ISoM integrates a comprehensive Brazilian education with multi-faceted opportunities for internationally certified education, providing Macaé with a true multi-lingual international school. ISoM provides learning environment resources to ensure that the education of each child is inclusive and respects each child’s home language and country of origin.
